Abstract

Introduction: A caesarean section, also known as C section is the use of surgery to deliver one or more babies. A caesarean section is often necessary when a vaginal delivery would put the baby or the mother at risk. The international healthcare community has considered the ideal rate for caesarean sections to be between 10-15% since 30 years2. In recent years caesarean sections has been gradually increasing both in developed and developing countries which posses potential adverse consequences to maternal health newborn health and to future pregnancies. Unnecessary C-sections are not only costlier, but also more dangerous.

Objectives:

  1. To find out the ratio of caesarean section deliveries to normal vaginal deliveries among the study population
  2. To find out the indications of C section deliveries.
  3. To compare the resultant ratio with the national ratio.

Material and Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted in Chhattisgarh Institute of  Medical Sciences, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh  with the approval of institutional ethical committee during the period of September- October 2017 among 100 women admitted in labour ward. All the women who gave consent to participate in the study were included. Operational definition of vaginal delivery use in the study was a birth of offspring through the vagina. Cesarian delivery was defined as the use of surgery to deliver one or more babies. Data was collected using Predesigned, pretested, validated and structured proforma.

Result: The prevalence of cesarean section in our study was 34%. In this study most common indication for LSCS was a previous C-section delivery, Other indicatons found in the present study was obstructed labour(6%), haemorrhage(4%),  anaemia (2%), and multiple pregnancies (2%). According to this study the prevalence of caesarean deliveries in CIMS Bilaspur is 34 per 100 pregnant women while the national prevalence is around 15% although the percentage is as high as 65% in certain private hospitals and affluent communities.

Conclusion: The cesarean section prevalence in our study was 34%, which was higher than recommended rate of caesarean sections. Hence various measures should be taken to reduce the prevalence of cesarean section like proper counseling of pregnant women to keep their weight in check, to be physically active during their pregnancy, educating about danger sign of pregnancy, compliance for follow up visits etc can increase chances of normal vaginal delivery.
