USE OF HYDROQUINONE AND SALICYLIC ACID IN PATIENTS WITH PERI ORBITAL HYPERPIGMENTATION: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
Abstract
Periorbital hyperpigmentation (POH) is a common hyperpigmentary problem of the face, which can be psychologically distressing and it can influence an individual's quality of life.
Aim of Study: Use Of Hydroquinone and Salicylic Acid in Patients with Peri Orbital Hyperpigmentation: A Comparative Analysis.
Material and Methods: Present comparative prospective study was conducted in the Department of Dermatology in a tertiary care hospital at KM Medical College and Hospital Mathura. It consisted of 40 patients of both gender attending the outpatient clinic of Dermatology Department, with clinically evident POH were included in the study. Patients were randomized into two groups of 20 each and first group received 4% Hydroquinone (HQ) daily and the other received 30% Salicylic Acid (SA) peel once fortnightly for 3 months. The peel was applied serially at biweekly intervals at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks after the test peel. Feathering was done to avoid sharp demarcation between peeled and non-peeled areas.
Result: In HQ group there were 25% male and 75% female while in SA group 30% male and 70% female were observed .Statistically significant difference was observed in both the groups. A total of 28(70%) patients were having constitutional POH o which 9 (81.8%) were male and 19(65.5%) were female. Post-inflammatory POH was observed in 5(12.5%) of which 1(9.1%) was male and 4(13.8%) were female, Vascular POH was observed in one female and other type was 6(15%). There was significant difference in patients VAS at 4 weeks in HQ and SA group. In 8 and 12 weeks no significance was observed in both the groups.
Conclusion: Periorbital hyperpigmentation is concern about cosmetic reasons especially in women. Both hydroquinoneand salicylic acid significantly and equally improve the quality of life and are equally effective. Mild to moderate improvement in appearance can cause an improvement in the quality of life of the patients.
